Synopsis

This global story of fame, fortune, and musicals, is all about the moral lines we all cross to feed our ultimate humanly desire. The Musical is a gripping and entertaining story conveyed through song and choreography.

The production is the second most frequent performance ever to be presented on Broadway, surpassed only by "The Phantom of the Opera". Chicago portrays the story of two competing vaudevillian dancers named Velma and Roxie locked in jail for murder.

While Velma is already a well-known vaudevillian entertainer, Roxie is a aspiring performer trying to build her fame. Although they were both jailed for murder they had different motives. Velma's motive was heartbreak and betrayal after finding her husband and sister having an affair. Conversely, Roxie's motive was desperation, cunning, and opportunism. Thus unlike Velma's action, which was driven by emotion, Roxie's strategy was premeditated, and was intentionally used to garner attention.

Interwoven in the plot, Chicago also reveals the underground game played by law enforcement and ordinary people. Roxie's and Velma's lawyer, Billy Flynn, who focuses on defending women prisoners alleged of murder is seen making a spectacle of the trial, by manipulating his clients' hearing into dramatic performances composed of drama and pity.

While Matron "Mama" Morton is portrayed aiding the two felons build a connection with the outside world, mainly with Billy, and manipulating the other prisoners for her benefit.
