The historical production is reaching New York this July, at the magnificent Ambassador Theatre. Starring Ariana Madix, and crewed with Kimberly Marable as Velma Kelly and Max von Essen as Billy Flynn, among others. Tickets for this Tuesday 1st July 2025 performance start at $116.
Widely celebrated for its distinctive jazz-influenced theme, mesmerizing choreography, and minimalist staging style which reflects the essence of vaudeville, the show strongly criticizes the obsession with celebrity culture.
The reinvented musical set in 1920, featuring music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, centers around the themes of decadence, crime, and the allure of fame. After being premiered on Broadway in 1975, the musical has polarized audiences and critics alike, mainly for its thought-provoking message, and cultural impact.
Similar to Michael Corleone from The Godfather who turned from an innocent, outsider to a legacy, power inheritor, Chicago is a journey through the phases one goes through to satisfy their thirst for fame and fortune.
The musical demonstrates how even crime can be a way for fame, highlighting the flaw in the justice system. The musical portrays how individuals transform themselves, and who they are to reach their ultimate selfish goal. This production became sensational from the start for revolutionizing the crime game and introducing new roles of "women" to the industry. The 1996 Broadway production held the record as the second-longest-running American musical in Broadway history.
Chicago seeks to showcase the hollowness of fame, and the paradox between good deeds and status, that not all famous people are successful in the sense of morality. The show presents various individuals each acting for their personal interest, and how they intersect with each other's lives, through different viewpoints.
The performance has earned several awards including the Tony Awards (1997), Drama Desk Awards (1997), Grammy Awards (1998), Academy Awards (2003), Golden Globe Awards (2003), BAFTA Awards (2003), and many others.
