Events Experience

From the outside looking in, you might get the impression that the Ambassador Theatre in NYC isn’t all that exceptional. After all, its nondescript exterior design won’t necessarily wow you.

However, you will feel differently about the theater after making your way inside. It’s a one-of-a-kind venue to watch a Broadway performance because of its hexagonal auditorium. This layout makes the entire theater feel significantly more spacious than it would otherwise.

When Herbert J. Krapp was putting together his initial plans, he briefly toyed with having the auditorium’s proscenium and stage run parallel to the street. But he chose to turn them diagonally instead. This allowed him to fit over 1,100 seats in the theater instead of just 900 or so.

This decision changes the experience one might have when seeing Chicago or another performance at the Ambassador Theatre by providing more room for spectators to spread out. It also positively impacts everything from theatergoers’ line of sight to the acoustics inside the auditorium.

As if that wasn’t enough, walking into the Ambassador Theatre is like taking a step back in time since many of its original design features remain intact. In the auditorium, guests are treated to design elements like:

» Standing rails constructed out of marble
» Marble walls in the stairways leading from the orchestra level up to the balcony
» Adam-style wall panels
» Pilasters surrounding the proscenium
» A coffered ceiling complete with Adam-style reliefs

These decorative touches provide the Ambassador Theatre with tons of character and old-school charm and make seeing a show at the theater a better experience overall.
