Lee, Samuel, and Jacob Shubert — or the Shubert brothers, as they’re often referred to within the Broadway world — built one of the biggest theater empires ever in the early part of the 20th century. At one point, they owned nearly 90 theaters throughout the U.S. while operating and booking Broadway shows for many others.

By the 1940s, the Shubert brothers either owned or operated about half of the 40 theaters in New York City’s Theater District in Midtown Manhattan. The Ambassador Theatre in NYC was one of the first they built from the ground up while staking their claim to a large slice of the Big Apple’s Broadway scene.
